Sod prices expected to jump

The Nursery Sod Growers Association of Ontario is advising landscapers to “play it safe” and call their sod supplier before quoting on any long range projects.

The year has not been kind to sod growers who are faced with escalating costs of supplies used for the production of sod.
“Never in the history of the industry have producers faced such radical price increases in a single supply item, never mind three or four items,” says the association.

Fertilizer prices are up 100 per cent from 2007 rates and seed has increased 30 to 40 per cent, with prices predicted to rise even further. The obvious fuel price increase affects sod producers from seeding and mowing tractors, to irrigation systems right through to delivery vehicles.

It is expected that sod price will increase and fuel surcharges may be necessary.
