Last week to register: Build a Bid, Sept. 22
The
very popular and informative Build a Bid workshop is coming to
Ottawa. Delivered through SIMA, this full-day program will help you put
together and sell snow and ice proposals that fit YOUR business model.
Build a Bid will take place at the RA Centre 2451 Riverside Drive, from 8
a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and includes lunch. Cost for Landscape Ontario

Thanks for help on CLT test site clean up day
Thank you to the following Ottawa Chapter companies who donated supplies and volunteered their time last Friday, Sept. 10, at Kemptville College to clean up the CLT Test site before testing takes place this week: Ganden Landscapes, Bytowne Lawn Experts, Fraser Wilson Inc., Hirsig Landscapes, Greenscape, and Garden Creations. Some equipment was donated by Toms Air Cooled Engines, and the sand was delivered by Greely Sand and Gravel. Their continued support in the clean up is greatly appreciated. The Landscape Industry Certification Testing takes place this Friday, Sept., 17 at Kemptville College.

Ottawa Chapter meeting, Oct. 26
The October chapter meeting takes place on Tues., Oct. 26, at the RA Centre, 2451 Riverside Drive, Ottawa. The speaker will be Mark Burleton, manager of grounds and greenhouses with the National Capital Commission. Burleton manages the horticulture and landscape portfolio for six official residences, including Rideau Hall and 24 Sussex Drive. His topic will be attracting and retaining staff.

Funeral arrangements for Harvey Sinnema
It is with great sorrow that J. C. Bakker and Sons Nursery wishes to inform friends and associates in the nursery and landscape industry of the passing away of Mr. Harvey Sinnema. Harvey faithfully served the industry for over 33 years. On September 12 he was called home to his Lord and Saviour after a long struggle with cancer.
Funeral visitation will be at
Maranatha Christian Reformed Church, 301 Scott Street, St. Catharines on Thurs., Sept. 16, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Fri., Sept., 17, at 4:00 p.m. at the same location.

Road work at LO home office
From
now to mid-November, there will be NO ACCESS to the LO site from
Steeles Ave. The LO home office is only accessible from Derry Road, on
the south. Please see the detour map. Signs are also placed along the detour routes.

Save money with Safety Groups

The 2011 Safety Groups Program is set to begin a new season. Designed to promote health and safety in
the workplace, this program provides mentoring, pooling of
resources and sharing of best practices between member firms, their
sponsor and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Member
firms can receive, along with improved safety records, financial
benefits in the form of rebates from the WSIB.
The Safety Groups Program is administered by the WSIB. It has received high approval ratings from
participating members.

Star designer speaks on bulbs: Sept. 16 at TBG
Hear Dutch designer Jacqueline van der Kloet speak on bulbs, in a special member-only lecture Sept. 16 at the Toronto Botanical Garden. Her stylish naturalistic designs combine brilliant mixes of perennials and flower bulbs, and her talk will be specifically tailored to industry professionals — her portfolio includes collaboration with Piet Oudolf. The event features continental breakfast, lecture at 9:00 a.m. and a post-lecture tour. Tickets are $15. More information.

Vineland Research Day, Sept. 16
Vineland Research and Innovation Centre and Landscape Ontario are presenting a variety of researchers, extension and industry affiliates, who will give 15-minute presentations on their programs. At the beginning of the day there will be a hands-on tree liner production session in the Vineland retractable roof houses. Registration is $45, with costs covering lunch, and a CD of trial summaries for 2009 and interim reports for the 2010 season. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Rittenhouse building, Vineland Centre, 4890 Victoria Ave. N., Vineland Station. Low Impact Development Conference, Sept. 28
A conference hosted by the Credit Valley Conservation is about Low Impact Development. It will take place at the Mississauga Convention Centre, focusing on building the business case for implementing sustainable development practices in light of issues such as climate change, economy, environmental degradation, and infrastructure resiliency.
