Ottawa part of recycling program

Three Ottawa Chapter members are participating in the upcoming
CNLA/Landscape Ontario 2nd annual national plastics recycling event from June 24 to
July 4. They include Carp Garden Centre, 153 Donald B Munro Road, Carp, Green
Thumb Garden Centre, 17 Tristan Court, Ottawa, and Make it Green Garden
Centre, 5200 Flewellyn Road, Stittsville. Drop off horticultural pots,
cells and flats at the depots above during that week. For more

Landscape Industry Certified test in Ottawa

The Landscape Industry Certified Test will be held at Kemptville College
with the written exam on Aug. 11, and practical test day on Aug.

Ottawa Chapter golf tournament, Aug. 26
The annual Ottawa Chapter Golf tournament will take place at the Canadian Golf and Country Club, 7800 Golf Club Way, Ashton, The shotgun start is at 10 a.m.
Proceeds from the tournament go to the Ottawa Food Bank, along
with a food drive on the day of the tournament. Your golfing day
includes 18 holes, breakfast, dinner and live musical entertainment.
Early bird registration ends on July 30. Foursome prices along with
sponsorship begin at $675. Sponsorships are available. For more

Progress report on salt study released

The first Optimum Salting for Parking Lots and Sidewalks
interim progress report has been released. The report was authored by
Liping Fu and Raqib Omer, both of the University of Waterloo. The
primary goal of this research project is to develop a better
understanding of the conditions that influence the effectiveness of
various commonly-used deicing and anti-icing treatments for parking lots
and sidewalks, and to develop knowledge for optimum selection of
materials, application rates and techniques. To read more on this story

Rainwater harvesting systems, June 7
You are invited to attend Canada Green Building Council’s upcoming
workshop to learn design, installation and management of rainwater
harvesting systems. This one-day course focuses on the regulatory and
technical aspects of rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems for both
residential and ICI (industrial, commercial, institutional) buildings.
The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Earth Rangers

Seminar explains urns and marketing, July 27
A comprehensive program for retail garden centres, designers and interior landscapers
that will demonstrate how to decipher the customer’s needs, track trends and
design magnificent urns that will keep you busy for the season. Instructors
will explore planting combinations, maintenance, decor and the strategy of
sequential sales to develop a recipe for success. Participants will learn
proper pruning practices, develop marketing programs and learn to up sell with
every design. The seminar will take place at the LO home office in Milton, from
9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $115 for members, and $192 for non-members. For

Apprenticeship tax credit
The Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit is a non-refundable tax credit
equal to 10 per cent of the eligible salaries and wages payable to
apprentices in respect of employment after May 1, 2006. The maximum
credit an employer can claim is $2,000 per year. The contract must be
registered with the federal, or provincial government under an
apprenticeship program in Red Seal Trade. If you are an employer, you
may claim the credit on your Individual Income Tax Return, on line 412 –
Investment tax credit, by filing Form T2038(IND), Investment Tax Credit

Eloquip celebrates 25 years
Eloquip Ltd. is marking its 25th anniversary with
an open house on June 3, in Elora. Eloquip is taking the opportunity to

Green roof and wall networking, June 9

Join with green roof and wall advocates at the Dominion on Queen, 500

speakers include Terry McGlade, of Gardens in the Sky, and one of
Canada’s foremost experts on green roof technologies, and Scott

What’s your biggest mistake?
A new book is in the works that will contain stories from those working in
the industry revealing, My Biggest Mistake: Lessons learned the hard
way, that allowed us to take our company to the next level. The project
is coordinated and written by Jeffrey Scott, with help from
Landscape Ontario. Scott is a well-known speaker and consultant who has
spoken at Congress for the past number of years. He is looking for LO
contractors who have a story to share. Some questions he will ask
include, what was the big problem/mistake, and how did you resolve the
problem? Any member of LO interested in taking part in the program, is

Opportunity to hire new talent continues

MicroSkills requires support letters from employers in the GTA and
surrounding areas to accompany its proposal to renew the Horticulture
Technician program for women for 2012-2014. Pending funding, and with
support from the employers who see the need to hire in the spring of
2013 and 2014, MicroSkills expects to continue the successful program.
Jointly sponsored by Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced
Learning, Landscape Ontario and community partner MicroSkills, the
Horticulture Technician Program trains women with skills that meet
approved standards for Level 1 Horticulture Technician. To confirm your
interest in offering an internship, or placement opportunity to a

Park Alliance forum in St. Catharines

The Sports Turf Association, the Ontario Recreation Facilities
Association and the Ontario Parks Association are working in
collaboration as the Parks and Open Space Alliance to offer a
professional development opportunity for its collective memberships. The
5th Annual Summer Operational Forum, is set for June 22 at the St.
Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre. Speakers include Debbie
Whitehouse, executive director of parks at The Niagara Parks Commission,
Paul Ronan, OPA executive director, and representatives from the

Advanced Green Roof Maintenance seminar, July 26
Created
to assist designers, contractors, facility managers with an important, but
often overlooked aspect of green roofs: maintenance. The seminar examines
design phase considerations; best practices for planning, budgeting, and
implementing maintenance procedures; and approaches for rehabilitating green
roofs that have been subject to maintenance neglect. The seminar will take
place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at LO home office in Milton. Participants will
receive a 100-page manual with detailed case studies. Lunch is not included. Price
for LO members is $249, and for non-members it is $299. To find out more about

Students can apply for flowerbulb scholarship

The North American Flowerbulb Wholesalers Association is offering
students a $1,500 scholarship. The successful applicant must be a
student in a field related to flowerbulbs in some form, in the academic
year 2011-2012. All application forms must be submitted by 5 p.m. July
31, 2011, attached with a 400- to 500-word essay about flowerbulbs. The
successful applicant will be notified by Dec. 20, 2011. To find out more

A new enhancement tool has been added to the Health and Safety Ontario
website. A translation of everything on the website in the language of
choice is now available. The translation tool may be found on the right
