Frequently Asked Questions

What is CLD?

Certified Landscape Designer (CLD) is a professional designation that you can attain by meeting a high standard of excellence (established by the industry) for the landscape design profession. It is open to all members of the landscape design industry.

Why take the CLD workshop?

Taking the workshop will increase your professionalism and expertise in the design field. It will help you sharpen your key selling tool: your portfolio.
If you decide at some point to take the exam and earn the CLD designation, the CLD designation will provide you with a means of proving to your customers that you not only have the necessary education and industry experience, but also that you have written and passed an industry test proving a high degree of proficiency as a landscape designer.

Can Anyone Take the Workshop?

Yes! Anyone in the industry, with any combination of practical experience and/or formal design education can participate. See below for requirements to take the exam.

What will the workshop review?

– Elements that should be included in your professional design portfolio (with focus on overall design principles. Particular attention paid to landforms and site grading)
– Review of the requirements for the CLD program, including required work and educational experience
– Brief statement of exam components: grading, drainage, layout, plant material identification, plant material use, professional practices, regulations, structural/construction/paving details and quantity takeoffs
– Portfolio critique -bring your portfolio or designs

What if my portfolio isn’t ready?

No problem, attend the workshop anyway. The workshop will give you practical information on developing your portfolio. CLD designation is a two-step process: exam plus portfolio presentation. Portfolios can be submitted within 6 months of taking the exam.

Do I have to take the exam?

No. Taking the CLD exam on October 18th is completely optional (there is an additional fee). Exam writing dates will also be offered in the future. Please note that to write the exam, applicants must have seven years of combined academic and/or industry experience. If portions of the exam are not passed (70% required in all four categories), retake dates are available.
