Help with food drive, Apr. 23

Georgian Lakelands Chapter of Landscape Ontario is pleased to help the
Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe County Grocery Assistance Program (GAP)
at its 3rd annual ‘Fill a Landscape Trailer’ food drive.
Last year alone, GAP fed over 15,000 people with close to 5,000 of them,
children. The event will take place on Sat., Apr. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. at Botanix, Barrie’s Garden Centre, 375 Bayview Drive. Volunteer a
few hours at the food drive, bring your landscape equipment and show it
off, volunteer to greet visitors, work at the barbecue, or when you
shop over the Easter weekend, buy a bit more and bring your food
donations to help fill the trailer. For more information, contact Lexi Dearborn.

Food drive also in Thornbury, Apr. 23

In conjunction with the Easter Food Drive for the Elizabeth Fry Society
in Barrie, the Georgian Lakelands Chapter of Landscape Ontario will also
operate a ‘Fill a Landscape Trailer’ in Thornbury on Apr. 23. Efforts here will
benefit the Beaver Valley Outreach program, which is in need of
non-perishable food items to fill the tummies of numerous local
families. The event will take place on Apr. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
at the Beaver Valley Community Centre, 81 Victoria Street. Volunteer are

Kick-off with spring barbecue, Apr. 20

Join the Georgian Lakelands Chapter for a special Sector Group event, as
landscape contractors are invited to a kick-off to spring barbecue
hosted by by G.P. Masonry, 1319 Bayfield St., Barrie. You don’t want to
miss this great way to begin your spring season. Along with great
barbecue, they will fire up the pizza oven. There will be yard tours and
suppliers will showcase their 2011 products, as well as a presentation

Beautiful Edible Garden, Apr. 20

Hear about the latest in sustainable horticulture and incorporating edible
plants into your landscape with LO member Sean James of Fern Ridge Landscaping, at Centennial Hall, Central Library, 2331 New Street, Burlington.
Presented in partnership by Burlington Sustainable Development Committee and

Clean and green Veterans’ Memorial Parkway, Apr. 16

The London Chapter will join the executive of the Veterans’ Memorial
Parkway Community Initiative Program (VMP) with a clean and green
initiative for the Parkway on Sat., Apr. 16 from 8:30 to noon. The goal
is to get 1,000 participants to help clean up existing planting beds
along the Parkway, from Oxford to Gore Road. The chapter will be
involved in future beautification of this parkway and this is just the
first step in an ongoing involvement. Anyone who would like to
volunteer with this clean-up, should contact

WHMIS training, Apr. 28

Employers are required to provide annual WHMIS
training for their
workers. This seminar at Ottawa District Hockey Association, 1247
Kilborn Place, Ottawa, outlines the legislated requirements of this law.
Enroll your staff in this training, as they have the right to know
about hazardous products they deal with at work. For more details,

Note, firms must have WSIB coverage to attend this seminar. Cost to LO
members is $16, and for non-members it is $30. The seminar begins at 9

Upper Canada Golf Tournament, July 15
Plan to take a break from your busy season and join the Upper Canada Chapter for a

Prep for CLIA exam, Apr. 18

Knowing how to perform an irrigation system assessment and audit, helps
create better irrigation programs, plus saves lots of water. Learn about
irrigation systems, the plant/water relationship, soils, scheduling and
other related topics at the LO home office in Milton, when a prep
seminar will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will also help you
prepare to take the Irrigation Association’s CLIA exam; you must sign up
a minimum of 30 days prior to exam day at www.irrigation.org. Cost of
the seminar is $230 for LO members, and $384 for non-members. To find

Green roof and wall information and networking, Apr. 21

Join fellow green roof and wall advocates from 5:30-8 p.m. at the
Dominion on Queen, 500 Queen St. E, Toronto, for a networking and
information evening.Special guest speakers will include Terry McGlade,
founder and principal of Gardens in the Sky, and one of Canada’s
foremost experts on green roof technologies, and Dr. Brad Bass, a
researcher and the in-house green roof expert at Environment Canada.
Attendees will learn about current developments in green roof
infrastructure issues, such as maintenance, food production and more.

Soils
and Urban Trees Conference, Apr. 26 and 27 
A great line-up of professionals is coming to
the Toronto Botanical Garden on Apr. 26 and 27 for a comprehensive
study of soils and
urban trees. The Soils and Urban Trees Conference features
leading experts, William Bryant Logan, Paul Stamets, Olaf Ribeiro, Peter
Wild and James Urban, discussing the concepts of ideal soil structure
and biology. International Society
of Arboriculture Continuing Educations Units (CEU’s) are available for

Skilled
Trades and Career Fair, Apr. 28
The Options 2011 Skilled Trades and Career Fair is looking for
exhibitors to participate in a one-day free event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
where more than 4,000 high school students and community members will
be seeking information and interactive displays about the skilled
trades, as well as general information. As part of this event, more than
200 high school seniors will be competing in 13 Skilled Trades

Ministry of Labour holding workshops

A one-day workshop at six locations across Ontario will feature
information about the hazards and safety measures that the Ministry of
Labour will be looking for in workplaces. Participants will also receive
prevention strategies and resources that can be used to keep employees
safe from injuries and illness and the business free from fines and
penalties. Learn how the MOL is planning to respond to the Tony Dean
panel recommendations about changes and improvements to the health and
