Durham Region Job Fair
will be a one-day-only event at
the Ajax Convention Centre, on Wed., Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Emphasis will be on on Second Career Program
graduates. Skill development workshops will be held, including resume critiquing, job search strategies and
individual skills assessments. Participating employers must have jobs available, or be looking for talent to meet their company’s short-term

LO members in Amazing Bed Race

DenBok Landscaping and Design and Green Thumb Landscaping, both LO members located in Burlington, each entered a five-person team in the Amazing Bed Race in support of Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Foundation and The Rotary Club of Burlington North. Although neither team was declared the race champion, the real winners were the recipients of incredible $81,400 raised from the event. Habitat for Humanity asks for LO’s help
Habitat for Humanity has put the call out to Landscape Ontario members for immediate landscaping help for two homes currently being built in Oakville. The charity says it would appreciate the support of one or more of members to complete the work. Habitat Halton, a member of Habitat for Humanity Canada, has 700 volunteers, and has built homes that have helped break the cycle of poverty for 11 local families. Habitat for Humanity home tour this weekend
In 2009, National Capital Region Habitat for Humanity received its largest donation to date: A two-story brick home, built in 1967, in the Qualicum neighborhood of Ottawa. The donation resulted in a showcase home created through the volunteer efforts of many interior and exterior designers, builders and landscapers. Fundraising through home tours and the sale of this gift home will provide 10 homes for low income working families in Ottawa. Many Landscape Ontario Ottawa Chapter members have participated in this endeavour, Showcase Home. Tickets, are for $10 are available for this weekend’s home tour Fri., Oct. 8, from noon to 7 p.m., and Sat., Oct. 9, and Mon., Oct. 11, both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The home is located at 3 Esquimalt Avenue. Lunch and Learn Chapter meeting, Oct.

The chapter is trying a new format for the first meeting
this fall and is asking for members’ support. Last year members said
that sunny days in October must be worked and a meeting took second
priority. The Chapter board is hoping that because one must stop for
lunch, even on the job, there is opportunity to come to a meeting, have lunch, listen to the speaker
and network with colleagues — and still be back on the job early in the afternoon! Mark
Burleton, manager of grounds and greenhouses at the Official Residences,
National Capital Commission, will speak on attracting and keeping employees in
the new economy. Meet and greet at the RA Centre is at 10:45 a.m.,
followed by the Chapter meeting at 11, lunch at 11:45 to noon, the speaker at
12:15, and back to work at 1. Tickets are available online for $21, up to

The meeting topic is permits — how to successfully navigate the approval process for projects that involve Urban Forestry, Ravines and TRCA Protected Sites. Upper Canada Chapter meeting, Oct. 13

Chainsaw safety course, Nov. 8-9

The
Ministry of Labour requires that all landscapers using chainsaws on
the job are trained on their safe operation. This two-day seminar on
Nov. 8 and 9 helps satisfy these requirements. The second day will be
spent in the field working on techniques and safe operation while
cutting trees. Both seminars begin each day at 8:30 a.m., and go until 4

Waterloo Fall Freeze-up, Nov. 19
This year’s Fall Freeze-up has an all-new location — Waterloo Inn, 475 King Street North, Waterloo — and menu.
The annual Freeze-up is one of the most popular Waterloo Chapter events of the

Salt application research study
The Snow and Ice Management Sector Group of Landscape Ontario has commissioned a research study aimed to develop an optimum and defensible standard for salt application rates for parking lots. The research team wants to extend the data collection outside the Waterloo area. Save money with Safety Groups

The 2011 Safety Groups Program is set to begin a new season. Designed to promote health and safety in
the workplace, this program provides mentoring, pooling of
resources and sharing of best practices between member firms, their
sponsor and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Member
firms can receive, along with improved safety records, financial
benefits in the form of rebates from the WSIB.
The Safety Groups Program is administered by the WSIB. It has received high approval ratings from
participating members.

Steeles Ave. The LO home office is only accessible from Derry Road, on

Ontario Urban Forest Council’s conference, Nov. 4 – 5

Registration is open for the Ontario Urban Forest Council’s annual
conference, entitled Healthy Communities are Rooted in Urban Forests.

Computer-based exams are now available at testing centres across North America. Testing is more flexible and convenient with computer-based testing now open.
