Durham Chapter meeting, Oct. 16

area will have the opportunity on Thurs., Nov. 3, to connect with local
employers to learn more about their organizations and hiring processes,

Chapter enters agreement honouring veterans

Veterans Memorial Parkway Landscape Enhancement Project officially
launched on Sept. 30, when London mayor Joe Fontana joined
representatives of Landscape Ontario in signing an agreement, giving
authority to begin operations. Eventually 8,000 trees will be planted by LO members and community volunteers in
honour of and respect for Canada’s war veterans. The trees will stand along the parkway and serve as proud reminders of the honour and respect Londoners have for veterans. To view news reports

London Chapter meeting, Oct. 11
London Chapter meeting will take place at the Best Western Lamplight
Inn, 591 Wellington Road South, London, starting at 7 p.m. The event
will feature a conversation with Mike LaSelva of Workplace Safety and
Prevention Services (WSPS), and includes an overview of WSPS’s Safe
Communities Incentive program and other industry specific health and

Career fair
at Mississauga school
St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School in Mississauga is hosting a career
fair, on Nov. 2. The event offers each business to have a table to
contain information and props. Students from grades 10 to 12 will visit
the tables to see what interests them for their future and speak with
each business. The event begins with breakfast at 7:30, and student

Chainsaw seminar in Elmira
A two-day seminar on chainsaw safety meets the Ministry of Labour
requirements that all landscapers using chainsaws on the job be trained
on safe operation. Both classroom and outdoor instruction will take
place on Nov. 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days, at Allgreen Tree Service, 155

Fall Freeze-up, Nov. 18

Green roof boot camp starts Saturday
With the green roof industry growing by 28 per cent last year, there is a
need for trained professionals familiar with design, implementation and
technology. The Toronto Green Roof Boot Camp is being held in
conjunction with Greenbuild 2011. There are four distinct boot camps

Time to join a Safety Group

The 2012 Safety Groups Program helps industry firms develop a Ministry
of Labour compliant safety program for their workplaces. Firms will
select five WSIB safety elements at the start of the year, and then
initiate or improve upon them by attending at least three compulsory
meetings. Working with other members, the initiatives are put in place
by the end of the year. Along with an improved safety record, there are
financial benefits in the form of rebates from WSIB. For more details

Blitz checking protective equipment

The Ministry of Labour is conducting in October a blitz of workplaces,
focusing on the policies and correct wearing and use of personal
protective equipment. Personal protective equipment can include eye,
foot, head, hearing or skin protection. For more information on the
ministry’s guidelines, go to protective equipment.

Tree risk assessment course

Urban Forest Innovative Solutions is hosting the PNW-ISA Tree Risk
Assessment Course again this fall. Instructor Dr. Julian Dunster will
lead this two-day event at the Cawthra Estate in Mississauga on Oct. 27
and 28. Course attendance and successful completion of the written exam,
earns participating Certified Arborists and Registered Professional
Foresters the PNW-ISA Certified Tree Risk Assessor qualification.
Participation also earns the attendee 10 ISA CEUs. This is a limited

Highway project part of info-day on reducing
carbons

Come to Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 12, for
the latest information on carbon sequestration and pollution mitigation.
Learn how trees are a solution to carbon reduction. Part of the day
includes coordinated travel to highway greening sites at 401 and 427
intersection, a project backed by Landscape Ontario. One of the
scheduled speakers is Dr. Hannah Mathers, Vineland Research and
Innovation Centre. Cost is $65 per person, and registration closes Oct.

TBG hosts urban trees event

Two days of inspiring speakers, plus optional one-day tour of highlights
of Toronto’s urban forest are highlights in at program entitled,
Spreading Roots: Working Together to Protect our Urban Trees. In
parrtnership, with Ontario Urban Forest Council, Toronto Botanical

Plant Propagators Society meets, Oct 19 to 22

Anyone interested in ornamental plant production will want to attend the Eastern
Region International Plant Propagators Society conference in
Louisville, Ky. This plant production conference includes talks, tours,
plant auctions, and a chance to talk one-on-one with key plant industry

Students asked to create landscape design from tires

Ontario Tire Stewardship is accepting registrations for the 2011 OTS
Student Design Challenge until Oct. 17. The event is a chance to dream
up creative uses for recycled tire products to meet real world design
challenges that could earn a scholarship and chance to implement a
winning landscape design at Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works. Deadline
for project submission is Nov. 21. It is open to students of landscape
architecture and related disciplines currently attending a
