Families are welcome to attend the afternoon tour of Parkwood, former
home of R.S. McLaughlin, founder of General Motors of Canada, at 270 Simcoe St. North, Oshawa. The event will take place from 12 – 4 p.m. with refreshments provided by the chapter. Parkwood

The Ottawa Food Bank was the chosen charity for proceeds from this year’s annual Ottawa Chapter Golf Tournament. Chapter president and 2011 Golf Tournament chair Chris Burns will present the donation of $3,000 to the Ottawa Food Bank at the Oct. 18 Chapter meeting on behalf of all members.

Career fair
at Mississauga school
St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School in Mississauga is hosting a career
fair, on Nov. 2. The event offers each business a table to
contain information and props. Students from grades 10 to 12 will visit
the tables to see what interests them for their future and speak with
each business. The event begins with breakfast at 7:30, and student

Chainsaw seminar in Elmira
A two-day seminar on chainsaw safety meets the Ministry of Labour
requirements that all landscapers using chainsaws on the job be trained
on safe operation. Both classroom and outdoor instruction will take
place on Nov. 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days, at Allgreen Tree Service, 155

Fall Freeze-up, Nov. 18
Come out and enjoy a season-ending event at the 32nd Annual Waterloo

Downy mildew observed on impatiens

A number of contractors were frustrated with impatiens dying out in the
landscape this summer (See Horticulture Review, October 2011). The issue prompted Ball

Time to join a Safety Group

The 2012 Safety Groups Program helps industry firms develop a Ministry
of Labour compliant safety program for their workplaces. Firms will
select five WSIB safety elements at the start of the year, and then
initiate or improve upon them by attending at least three compulsory
meetings. Working with other members, the initiatives are put in place
by the end of the year. Along with an improved safety record, there are
financial benefits in the form of rebates from WSIB. For more details

Blitz checking protective equipment

The Ministry of Labour is conducting in October a blitz of workplaces,
focusing on the policies and correct wearing and use of personal
protective equipment. Personal protective equipment can include eye,
foot, head, hearing or skin protection. For more information on the

Tree risk assessment course

Urban Forest Innovative Solutions is hosting the PNW-ISA Tree Risk
Assessment Course again this fall. Instructor Dr. Julian Dunster will
lead this two-day event at the Cawthra Estate in Mississauga on Oct. 27
and 28. Course attendance and successful completion of the written exam,
earns participating Certified Arborists and Registered Professional
Foresters the PNW-ISA Certified Tree Risk Assessor qualification.
Participation also earns the attendee 10 ISA CEUs. This is a limited
course with room for 17 attendees, so register soon. For more

TBG hosts urban trees event

Two days of inspiring speakers, plus an optional one-day tour of parts
of Toronto’s urban forest are highlights in a program entitled,
Spreading Roots: Working Together to Protect our Urban Trees. In
parrtnership, with Ontario Urban Forest Council, Toronto Botanical

Plant Propagators Society meets, Oct. 19 to 22

Anyone interested in ornamental plant production will want to attend the Eastern
Region International Plant Propagators Society conference in
Louisville, Ky. This plant production conference includes talks, tours,
plant auctions, and a chance to talk one-on-one with key plant industry

Students asked to create landscape design from tires

Ontario Tire Stewardship registrations for the 2011 OTS
Student Design Challenge have been extended to Oct. 31. The event is a chance to dream
up creative uses for recycled tire products to meet real world design
challenges that could earn a scholarship and chance to implement a
winning landscape design at Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works. Deadline
for project submission is Nov. 21. It is open to students of landscape
architecture and related disciplines currently attending a
