Ornamental growers safety program

An Occupational Safety and Health Administration-compliant safety
seminar, aimed at ornamental growers, will take place on Jan. 30, from 9
a.m. to 12-noon at Iroquois Parks Sport Centre, Whitney Hall, 500
Victoria St. W., Whitby. This progressive risk management seminar will
engage owners using interactive training techniques to help employers
towards establishing a basic health and safety management program. To

programs are scheduled in London and Vineland in February and March.
Lunch is not included.

Durham chapter meeting, Feb. 7
This event will feature Rory Sheehan, a highly
sought-after speaker specializing in conversational sales. He will
teach the non-traditional sales approach to increase

offers horticulture apprenticeship

Starting Jan. 2, Mohawk College is offering a horticulture technician
apprenticeship program. This is a Red Seal-recognized program taught by
industry professionals experienced in horticulture education. The
college is booking candidates for both Level 1 and 2.

GreenTrade Expo 2012: Registration now open!

Preparations are underway for the 19th annual GreenTrade Expo, eastern
Ontario’s premier green industry event. This year’s Expo will include
MTO contractors’ breakfast, business building, networking and new
products, along with educational opportunities, all under one roof.
GreenTrade Expo will take place Feb. 15, at the newly constructed CE Centre,
4899 Uplands Drive, Ottawa. Exhibitor applications welcome and
sponsorships are available.

Certification dates for the 2012 Ottawa/Upper Canada Chapters have
just been announced. Candidates will have the opportunity to take the
written tests on Jan. 31, 2012 at Algonquin College and Sept.
27 at Kemptville College, followed the next day with practical  testing 
at Kemptville. For more information or

Upper Canada chapter meeting, Jan. 4

Loyalist College is offering the Horticultural Technician Apprenticeship
Level 2 in-class training. The course will be conducted at Connon
Nurseries, at 956 Old Highway 2, Quinte West. The class begins Jan. 9,

Professional LO members transform park in two days
In just two short days, Dec. 7 and 8, St. James Park in Toronto was
transformed by members of Landscape Ontario, the
Nursery Sod Growers Association and Project EverGreen, demonstrating what happens when green industry pros take on a job. The three-acre park, was aerated and amended, mature trees and shrubs
were pruned and mulched and fresh sod laid throughout. Materials and time were all donated. The event attracted huge media attention in Ontario and across Canada. To view some of

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre is holding an open house on Dec. 16, hosting an afternoon of holiday

Fall seminar series

Chiseled in Stone: An Introduction, Jan. 23
This three-day introductory seminar is suitable for those seeking greater
insight and skill development in the art of stone masonry. Topics
covered include construction techniques, selection and application of
various building materials, relationship of design to stone selection,
and the hands-on skills of working with natural stone. Participants can
expect to leave the seminar with the knowledge and basic skills required
to successfully complete any stone masonry project, but not the years
of practice required to hone masonry skills. Participants are required to bring
the following personal protective equipment: work boots, gloves, eye
and hearing protection, dust mask, etc., along with a 2-3 lb. steel
mallet, one splitting chisel and one facing chisel. You are asked to
help clean up at the end of the day. Flagstone is touched on in this
seminar, but covered at length in LC002

Survey to provide info on invasive species
The Invasive Species Centre is gathering information on the status of
activities in Ontario with respect to invasive species
education/outreach and invasive plant management. The survey contains 28
questions, mostly multiple choice. Once answers have been
tabulated, results will be posted online early next year. Landscape
Ontario is a member of the Invasive Species Council. The deadline for
responses is Jan. 12, 2012. Survey Link.


Time to join a Safety Group

The 2012
WSIB/Landscape Ontario Safety Groups Program helps industry firms develop a Ministry
of Labour compliant safety program for their workplaces. Firms will
select five WSIB safety elements at the start of the year, and then
initiate or improve upon them by attending at least three compulsory
meetings. Working with other members, the initiatives are put in place
by the end of the year. Along with an improved safety record, there are
financial benefits in the form of rebates from WSIB. For more details

New accessibility standards coming in January

As of Jan. 1, 2012, all employers in Ontario who provide goods and
services must be compliant with Accessibility Standards for Customer
Service issued under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities
Act
. Employers will have a legislated obligation accommodate customers
with disabilities. The province has a
website explaining the new rules, while a number of companies are
providing seminars on the issue. Go to seminars to see dates and prices.
