COVID-19 - Resources

Let’s plant hope

We are working hard with decision makers to help inform them on an approach to opening up our sector that will keep Ontarians safe while allowing our businesses to operate. If you are also planning to reach out to the province around opening up the economy, we ask that you be respectful of the time we are in. Decision makers share our desire to open up the economy, but they must take an approach that protects Ontarians.  It is important to highlight how the industry can – and will – work with safety as its primary objective.

MPPs can be contacted by email or telephone; here is a directory. Above all, be authentic. Talk about your prospects from your personal perspective. But recognize the tough situation elected representatives are facing and the multitude of needs they face.

The following points are offered with these needs in mind – especially how you can work safely. NOTE: A template letter is not effective in these situations. Your representatives need to understand your story. The points below help you tell it.

  • Introduce your business – how many people do you employ, how long have you been in business, where are you located, etc.
  • Talk about engagement  you have in your community. Perhaps you sponsor kids’ soccer, or donate produce to a community garden, etc.
  • Discuss the benefits of gardening and outdoor spaces. These include the mental health aspects of gardening and benefits to the environment, the fact that food products can come from gardens and the need for outdoor spaces we can enjoy safely.
  • Outline your business’s problem. It is important that the government knows how critical this season is for your business and industry. Describe the revenue you make in the spring, for example, 75% or $X.
  • Explain how you will mitigate risk in line with the government’s objectives and the examples above.
  • Ask your local MPP how he or she can help.

Attention Suppliers: You can help. In addition to supporting Government Relations activity, please educate your customers about how important it is to focus on safety. We have revamped our website so that the Safety Protocol section is up front.

We are also hosting a Town Hall Webinar tomorrow at 10 a.m. The focus will be on safe operations. Please register here
