Job Description – Nursery Technical Analyst
The candidate will provide technical consulting services to Ontario Growers to help them develop on-farm programs which will make them compliant with new government regulations, especially those related to the environment and invasive alien species.
The candidate will also represent the nursery industry perspective at government consultations.
Job Duties:
• Develop programs and communications to assist growers interpret understand and respond to government regulations with appropriate compliance measures.
• Attend government consultations on behalf of the Ontario nursery sector in areas of environmental planning, water taking, source water protection, species at risk regulations, phyto-sanitary certification programs, health and safety procedures, quarantine and other related grower issues.
• Interact with current grower technical analyst at CNLA to align federal-provincial agendas on issues that impact nursery production (environment, pesticides, domestic and export certification, border issues, etc.) A Memorandum of Understanding between LOHTA and CNLA will outline the cooperating activities between the two positions.
• Communicate regulations to growers via regularly scheduled e-mail newsletters and through various provincial and national trade publications
• Be the primary grower contact at LOHTA presiding over the events and activities of the Growers Commodity Group and its various subcommittees
• Interact with government nursery specialists and bureaucrats at OMAFRA, AAFC, CFIA, MOE etc.
Fee for Service
In addition to the general grower support functions the candidate will also deliver technical advisory services to nursery producers on a fee-for-service basis. These services will include, but are not limited to:
• Assistance in applying for water permits
• On site monitoring of pests and diseases
• Establishment of IPM programs
• Development of staff training programs in areas such as IPM, phytosanitary certification, fertility, new growing practices
• Provide technology transfer services whenever new production research results become available
• Assistance in implementation of on-farm research projects and documenting for SR&ED and IRAP claims
• The candidate will work with appropriate LOHTA staff to develop a marketing and communications plan listing the services available and the fees for these services
Qualifications
The candidate will:
• Have proven extensive technical experience in the Nursery Industry
• Possess excellent communications and interpersonal competencies
• Be knowledgeable regarding government regulations affecting the Nursery industry
• Be able to access a personal and business network including growers, suppliers and appropriate government officials.
• Possess an entrepreneurial characteristics
