Students can apply for flowerbulb scholarship

The North American Flowerbulb Wholesalers Association is proud to offer students a $1,500 scholarship in memory of Karl Schroff.

The successful applicant must be a student in a field related to flowerbulbs in some form, not necessarily in horticulture, in the academic year 2011-2012.
All application forms must be submitted by 5 p.m. July 31, 2011, attached with a 400- to 500-word essay about flowerbulbs. All entries must additionally indicate the purpose for which the applicant intends to use the scholarship, should their entry be chosen.

The scholarship is named for Karl Schroff, a broker who helped many flowerbulb companies for more than 50 years. Schroff died Oct. 22, 2003 at age 81. Many people involved in the bulb trade have fond memories of Schroff. His helpfulness, personality and business sense won the heart of all who met him.
Schroff was knowledgeable about the flowerbulb business and made frequent trips to Holland to visit customers and educate them about the import process.

The successful applicant will be notified by Dec. 20, 2011.
