Jan Johnsen

Jan Johnsen is a principal of the award-winning Johnsen Landscapes & Pools in New York, and an admired garden designer and writer. She was the 2019 recipient of the prestigious ‘Award of Distinction’ from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. Jan taught at Columbia University for many years and still teaches at the New York Botanical Garden where she was named “Instructor of the Year”.

Jan’s new book, ‘Floratopia – 110 Flower Garden Ideas for Your Yard, Patio or Balcony’, (Countryman Press) will be out in mid February, 2021. They join her other landscape design books, Gardentopia, Heaven is a Garden and The Spirit of Stone.

Trained in landscape architecture and professional horticulture, Jan has worked in Japan, Hawaii, and Kenya, among other places. She is an inspiring speaker and loves to show how you can “co-create with nature” in your backyard.

"Learning From Before & After"

Jan Johnsen
This illustrated talk shares an array of landscape design principles using photos of ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of real life residential landscapes. They show how an outdoor space of any size can be transformed. A discussion of design pitfalls to avoid is included. Each example is a built project and describes specific design techniques, planting combinations and more. This talk is informative and lots of fun!
