TO: GROWERS CHAIRS, PROVINCIAL ASSOCIATION OFFICES

FROM: CHRIS D. ANDREWS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

RE: JAPANESE BARBERRY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The revised directive D-01-04, Plant Protection Import and Domestic Movement Requirements for Barberry (Berberis, mahoberberis, Mahonia) has now been signed by the CFIA Director and is available on the CFIA Web Site:

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/protect/dir/directe.shtml

Import permits can be submitted to the Permit Office now.

Appendix 1 lists those varieties of Berberis, Mahoberberis, and Mahonia permitted to be imported and moved within Canada.

Appendix 4 details information for the Application for approval in the Canadian Barberry Certification Program (CBCP)

Appendix 6, Approved Nurseries, USDA APHIS Barberry Certification Program Compliance List, summarizes those exporting nurseries that have signed a USDA compliance agreement and that have given the CFIA written permission for their name to appear on the Internet version of this directive. Check with your US supplier to ensure that they have signed an approval agreement and have agreed to have their name appear on the CFIA web site.

This list will be updated as more US nurseries provide permission.

NOTE: CNLA Growers Chair Jeff Hicks, Pickett’s Nursery, is importing 220 samples for CFIA to use for training across Canada. Importing growers will be asked for contributions to offset the cost of these plants.

For further information, contact your local CFIA office or the CNLA.
