Contract opportunity:
Horticultural care of the Commonwealth War Graves in Aylmer Cemetery, Aylmer, Ont.
 
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is looking for a contractor to provide horticultural care for the Commonwealth War Graves in Aylmer Cemetery. The contractor will provide planting in spring, continued maintenance throughout the growing season including headstone cleaning, and border cleaning and preparation for the following season. This is a contract for a two-year period.

Description
There are 19 Commonwealth War Graves in the Aylmer cemetery. 13 of those graves are marked with a Commonwealth Headstones in a small Field of Honour at the entrance to the cemetery. The remaining six are scattered within the cemetery boundaries.

Planting
A mixture of annual, perennials and shrubs are to be planted and maintained within the borders. The contractor will provide a list with a selection of climate appropriate and pest resistant plants for assessment, selection, and approval by the CWGC.

Once approved, the contractor will ensure that plants are planted and maintained at a level that meets CWGC standards. CWGC standards are available upon request and will be included as part of the contract.

Turf
The turf in the Field of Honour is to be kept healthy, well-trimmed and edged to create crisp straight borders around the flower beds.

Irrigation
Plants and turf must be watered, as required, to ensure their continued health and growth. There is an irrigation system that will need to be opened in the spring and winterized in the fall. The contractor is expected to monitor the irrigation status throughout the season and report any issues, if applicable.

Aim
The aim is to maintain the war dead graves in Aylmer cemetery in a manner that reflects the debt of honour owed to those who died while in the service of their nation, and ensure that their sacrifice is remembered, valued, and cherished.

Background
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is responsible for 1.7 million commemorations, in 154 countries throughout the world. Canada and Americas Area’s (CAMA) of responsibility resides in the Americas and Caribbean. CAMA manages more than 20,800 Commonwealth war commemorations; this includes some 16,600 headstones and 4,200 names on memorials. Furthermore, the CWGC, on behalf of Veterans Affairs Canada, are responsible for the care and maintenance of veterans’ markers provided by the Government of Canada.
