Press Release
Milton, Ontario (Feb, 2009) – Landscape Ontario has received numerous reports of road salt shortages due to above average snow falls, increased demand and problems with distribution of limited salt stockpiles.
Private contractors, who remove snow and ice from parking lots, commercial businesses and retail establishments, say they are having difficulty to access salt. Many point to limited inventory being reserved for government institutions on roads and highways.
The industry is attempting to find supplies from outside Ontario, however, this will significantly raise the price.
The availability of salt is decreasing quickly as more and more snow falls, causing both economic and safety issues for contractors and their customers.
With heavy winter storms still forecasted and winter far from over, the lack of salt can create dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians. Landscape Ontario encourages the public to take extra care. Property owners and managers should take steps to raise safety awareness with their tenants, to post signs and be extra vigilant.
