Day of Tribute

Landscape Ontario’s Ottawa Chapter organized a Day of Tribute on October 19 to honour Canadian soldiers at the National Military Cemetery in Ottawa. The day of volunteer work was organized by Sharon Urquhart of Green Unlimited and Chris Lemke of Weed Man. Over 50 volunteers came together to honour our service men and women by helping to care for the grounds at the cemetery.

The volunteer crew built an interlock pathway and performed maintenance jobs such as fertilizing, overseeding, planting, tree care, pruning and mulching. The work is intended to reassure visitors to the cemetery, whether for funerals or to remember the past, that the sacrifices of our soldiers are not in vain.

Organizers would like to thank the industry professionals who contributed to the success of the tribute. The number of donations received from suppliers was staggering — grass seed, fertilizer, gypsum, plant material, soil, mulch, stone pavers, boxed lunches, coffee and doughnuts to feed the volunteers and commemorative t-shirts to take home. Many thanks to Bayer, Nu-Gro, Knippel Nursery, Maurice Yelle, Plant Prod, Ritchie Feed and Seed, Rockliffe Nursery, Tim Horton’s, Maurice Yelle, Koppert Canada, Permacon, Scott’s and Vanhof and Blokker.

Thanks to the volunteers who braved the not-so-great weather to do what they do best: All Seasons Gardening and Maintenance, Campbell’s Tree Service, Cullen Landscaping, Garden Creations, Green Unlimited, Greenscape Watering Systems, Greenspace Services, Hansen Lawn and Gardens, Tim Northcote(reservist), Nutrilawn, RJ Rogers Landscaping, Service Master, The Pond Centre, Weedman, Welwyn Wong Landscape Design and All Seasons Gardening and Maintenance (who came all the way from Oshawa).

“I must say that I am very proud to be involved in an industry whose members give of themselves to better their community” said Urquhart.
