Landscape Ontario’s Awards of Excellence honour best in horticulture industry
January 10, 2002, Toronto, ON – Landscape Ontario (LO) recognized the best in the business with their annual Awards of Excellence, held Tuesday, January 8, 2002 in conjunction with Congress, Canada’s International Horticultural Trade Show and Conference.
The awards ceremony, held at the International Plaza Hotel, was hosted by Haig Seferian, of LO’s Designers Group and HGTV’s Garden Architecture. The program honours winners in construction, design and maintenance categories. The winners of the Growers and Garden Centre awards were also highlighted at the ceremony.
“Landscape Ontario members continue to set the standard for excellence in the horticulture industry,” said Tony DiGiovanni, Executive Director of LO. “The calibre of workmanship is outstanding.”
Several new awards were unveiled this year. The Apprentice Award was presented to the City of Mississauga, for their support of the horticultural apprenticeship program. Individuals and companies involved with Toronto’s Tree Advocacy Program were also honoured. A new scholarship was also announced in memory of Casey Van Maris.
The Environmental Award was presented to Manulife Financial for setting a corporate example of excellence in horticultural practices. International Landscaping Inc. won the prestigious Grounds Management Award.
Two Past Presidents’ Awards were presented to Lex Kraft of Windsor and Tim Kearney of Ottawa, for service, dedication and commitment to advancing the horticulture industry in Ontario. The Garden Communicator of the Year Award was presented to Jim St. Marie, gardener, lecturer and columnist, of Waterloo.
The 2001 Casey Van Maris Award, recognizing innovative and unique landscape design, went to Kim Price Landscape Design. The coveted Dunington-Grubb Award, for the most outstanding and highest overall scoring in the construction categories, went to Acme Environmental Landscape Design Ltd.
