SLOME: an Interactive Exploration Day, May 11
Thousands of students learn about careers in science, technology and trades at SLOME (Skills London Ottawa Middlesex Elgin), an Interactive Exploration Day held annually in May by
the Elgin Middlesex Oxford Workforce Planning and Development Board.
The event will take place at Agriplex, Western Fair, London. Employers and associations are invited to come out to inspire students.

Ottawa imposes water ban
The City of Ottawa has placed an immediate ban on all outdoor watering in the communities of Barrhaven, Manotick and Riverside South.  The move has potential negative consequences for Ottawa-area landscape companies. In
Memoriam, John Ferreira

John Ferreira, president of Don Valley Landscaping in Thornhill, passed
away suddenly on Apr. 8. He was known as a wonderful
loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. A
funeral mass was held on Apr. 12 at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church.
He rested at Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill. Donations were made to Canadian
Food for Children.   

Annual golf tournament, July 28
The Toronto Chapter is returning to Nobleton Lakes Golf Club, 125
Nobleton Lakes Drive, on July 28 for the annual Dick Sale Memorial Golf
Tournament. This shotgun-start tournament begins with registration and
lunch at 11 a.m. and tee-off at 1 p.m. Pricing and sponsorship

Baseball tournament accepting teams
Bring
your staff, family and friends to the Toronto Chapter’s annual baseball
tournament. This slow-pitch tournament will take place on Aug. 14 at
the Richmond Greens Sports Centre and Park, 1300 Elgin Mills Road East,
Richmond Hill. The tournament will run from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with
trophies and a barbecue lunch included in the fee of $550 per team.
Each team is guaranteed two games. Ideally-mixed teams should include
five women and 10 men. Registration information will be available

Upper Canada Golf Tournament, July 15

Plan to take a break from your busy season and join the Upper Canada Chapter for a
fun day on the links at Briar Fox Golf Club, Marysville. Registration
begins at 9 a.m., with tee-off at 10. The day will conclude with a
steak dinner and prizes. Cost is only $100. per golfer, which
includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, steak dinner and prizes. If you
register your foursome before June 30, there is a 10 per cent discount off the

Great Tree Hunt

revived
Three LO Waterloo Chapter members and professional
arborists, Phil Dickie, Mike Hayes and Greg Templeman, have undertaken the task to initiate the 2011 Champion
Tree Hunt of Waterloo Region.

The purpose of the hunt is to locate and identify champion
trees within the Region of Waterloo, and raise awareness of the value of tree
preservation. The hunt will close Sept. 30. The Chapter hopes the Champion Tree Hunt will generate an interest and
involvement from residents within the Region of Waterloo.To locate the website, go to Tree Hunt. In 1992, when the original Great Tree Hunt was held, a total of 430 nominations were received.

Windsor Chapter Awards of Distinction

Don’t miss your chance to be recognized for all your hard work. This
year’s Windsor Chapter Awards of Distinction entry form is now
available. The old format awarded gold, silver and bronze prizes; this year
there is the option for multiple winners in each category. In addition, four
new categories have been added: large water feature, small water feature, large
hardscape and small hardscape. The deadline for entries is Aug. 31 and the awards
presentation will take place at Top Grade Landscape and Garden Solutions

Apprenticeship tax credit
Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit is a non-refundable tax credit
equal to 10 per cent of the eligible salaries and wages payable to
apprentices in respect of employment after May 1, 2006. The maximum
credit an employer can claim is $2,000 per year. The contract must be
registered with the federal, or provincial government under an
apprenticeship program in Red Seal Trade. If you are an employer, you
may claim the credit on your Individual Income Tax Return, on line 412 –
Investment tax credit, by filing Form T2038(IND), Investment Tax Credit
(Individuals). Go to Canada Revenue for more information.

Students can apply for flowerbulb scholarship

The North American Flowerbulb Wholesalers Association is offering
students a $1,500 scholarship. The successful applicant must be a
student in a field related to flowerbulbs in some form, in the academic
year 2011-2012. All application forms must be submitted by 5 p.m. July
31, 2011, attached with a 400- to 500-word essay about flowerbulbs. The
successful applicant will be notified by Dec. 20, 2011. To find out more
