Colleen Zacharias – “The Master Gardener” – Prior to 2010, the Master Gardener Program was made available to Manitobans by the University of Saskatchewan through distance education. The program is now offered by Assiniboine Community College. Why should the horticultural community support a locally delivered program? What does the program involve and how do Master Gardeners contribute to both the gardening community and the local hort industry? Please join Colleen for an interesting discussion of the diverse ways in which Master Gardeners contribute to the horticultural scene and how we can ensure that the program continues to inspire up and coming gardeners.

Philip Ronald – “Preparing for the Arrival of Emerald Ash Borer in Manitoba”

Kathy Fediw, LEED AP, CLP, CLT is an internationally-known Interior Plantscape consultant, author and speaker with over 30 years’ experience.  Her company, Johnson Fediw Associates, provides green management consulting, in-house workshops and green business certification to interior plantscape companies and associations.  She developed the Green Earth—Green Plants® certification program for interiorscape businesses and projects, which now has 24 certified businesses throughout the US.   She is the only independent interiorscape consultant who is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Rick Bartel holds a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Biology, with an emphasis in habitat management. As a water feature designer, Rick is credited with reaching the eleven million gallon milestone. He is one of only a few Certified Master Water Feature Specialists in the entire country and has been nationally published more than 300 times for articles on the subject of quality water feature design and installation. Rick and his water features have been featured on the DIY Networks Waterscapes Workshop as well as HGTV’s Extreme Landscapes, and he is most notably recognized throughout the industry for his development of the R.I.S.E. Method; a natural approach to rock and boulder placement techniques resulting in more than 1800 national and international awards and recognitions for his phenomenal work. He is also a design consultant for the National Wildlife Federation’s Habitat Program with more than 250 certified wildlife refuges centered around his water creations.

Colleen is a Master Gardener and will complete the requirements of the Prairie Horticulture Certificate Program, U of M, in 2011.  She is President of the Friends of Gardens Manitoba (formerly Friends of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory) and Co-Chair of The Prairie Garden, Western Canada’s only gardening annual since 1937.  Colleen is passionate about connecting Manitoba gardeners with the experts, products and services that are a part of Manitoba’s vital horticultural community and chairs Gardening Saturday, an annual gardening tradeshow and symposium.  She also solicits and edits articles from local gardening experts for a weekly column that appears in the Free Press Homes section.  Colleen has been actively involved in successfully advocating for a locally delivered Master Gardener program and in the creation of a Manitoba Master Gardener Association.

Dr. Philip Ronald was raised in the Canadian prairies and educated in plant breeding and horticulture at the University of Manitoba and University of Saskatchewan. Philip completed his Ph.D. in 2000 as part of the Native Fruit Program at the UofS investigating saskatoon berry host response to an important fungal disease. He presently manages Riverbend Orchards, a 20 acre fruit farm in Portage la Prairie while providing support to the research and marketing programs at Jeffries Nurseries. Dr. Ronald also serves as a board member for Landscape Manitoba and the Canadian Ornamental Plant Foundation.
