Chapter to tour Hanson
Hardscapes, Oct. 6
Join
the Waterloo Chapter at 5:30 p.m. for a facility tour at Hanson
Hardscapes, 1081 Rife Road, Cambridge. Safety boots are required. The tour will be followed with a
barbecue dinner and presentations from ICPI Ontario Chapter, CNLA and

Chainsaw safety

The
Ministry of Labour requires that all landscapers using chainsaws on
the job are trained on their safe operation. This two-day seminar on
Nov. 8 and 9 helps satisfy these requirements. The second day will be
spent in the field working on techniques and safe operation while
cutting trees. Both seminars begin each day at 8:30 a.m., and go until 4

Great list of speakers at Garden Symposium
Interest is escalating for one of the most exciting lineup of speakers to take part in Landscape Ontario’s Garden Centre Symposium. It’s all set to come together on Mon., Oct. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Berton Room at Toronto Congress Centre. To see much more about this great event, click on Symposium. Growers to tour in Niagara region, Sept. 14
The LO Growers Group heads to the Niagara Region for a day of nursery tours and fellowship on Sept. 14. Stops include Connon Nurseries, CBV Holdings, Blue Sky Nursery, JC Bakker & Sons, Mori Nurseries, Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. Steeles Ave. The LO home office is only accessible from Derry Road, on
the south. Please see the detour map. Signs are also placed along the detour routes.

Save money with Safety Groups

The 2011 Safety Groups Program is set to begin a new season. Designed to promote health and safety in
the workplace, this program provides mentoring, pooling of
resources and sharing of best practices between member firms, their
sponsor and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Member
firms can receive, along with improved safety records, financial
benefits in the form of rebates from the WSIB.
The Safety Groups Program is administered by the WSIB. It has received high approval ratings from
participating members.

Star designer speaks on bulbs: Sept. 16 at TBG
Hear Dutch designer Jacqueline van der Kloet speak on bulbs, in a special member-only lecture Sept. 16 at the Toronto Botanical Garden. Her stylish naturalistic designs combine brilliant mixes of perennials and flower bulbs, and her talk will be specifically tailored to industry professionals — her portfolio includes collaboration with Piet Oudolf. The event features continental breakfast, lecture at 9:00 a.m. and a post-lecture tour. Tickets are $15. More information.

Vineland Research Day, Sept. 16
Vineland Research and Innovation Centre and Landscape Ontario are presenting a variety of researchers, extension and industry affiliates, who will give 15-minute presentations on their programs. At the beginning of the day there will be a hands-on tree liner production session in the Vineland retractable roof houses. Registration is $45, with costs covering lunch, and a CD of trial summaries for 2009 and interim reports for the 2010 season. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Rittenhouse building, Vineland Centre, 4890 Victoria Ave. N., Vineland Station. Educational Short Course, Sept. 12
Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, 4890 Victoria Avenue N., Vineland Station, and Master Gardeners of Ontario will present an Educational Short Course on Sept. 12. Take a tour of the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre and enjoy a tasting at The Foreign Affair Winery. TBG Flocktail party, Sept. 15
The birdhouse design project ‘For the Birds’ was initiated to bring attention to the Toronto Botanical Garden mandate to promote environmental awareness through education, enlighten the community to the plight of songbirds, promote wildlife preservation, ecological awareness and sustainability. Low Impact Development Conference, Sept. 28
A conference hosted by the Credit Valley Conservation is about Low Impact Development. It will take place at the Mississauga Convention Centre, focusing on building the business case for implementing sustainable development practices in light of issues such as climate change, economy, environmental degradation, and infrastructure resiliency.
