Special meeting set for employment issues



A special meeting of LO’s Upper Canada Chapter will include a panel discussion on apprenticeship and job training. The special event will take place on Wed., Sept. 16, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Strathcona Paper Centre’s Good Year Lounge at 16 McPherson Drive, Napanee. Guest panelists will include John O’Rourke, Employment and Training Consultant with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), Janet McQuaid of Job Connect, a representative from Loyalist College, Landscape Ontario and from the Upper Canada Chapter Education Committee and Pam McCormick from Simply Landscaping, a local employer who has had an employee complete the apprenticeship process. Panelists will discuss: What do we need to do to have the apprenticeship program up and running this winter? Qualifications required by employer for signing employees off on various skills required for on the job training. Members asked to help with Habitat for Humanity project



Members of the Ottawa and Upper Canada chapters of LO are being asked to help with material and labour to take part in a Habitat for Humanity project in Kingston. If enough volunteers step forward it is hoped the work will be completed by Sept. 18. As well, installation of water and hydro will determine a completion date. Habitat for Humanity is a registered charitable organization that seeks donations in order to build affordable homes for low income families. The partnered families have to provide 500 hours of “sweat equity” to the build program and purchase the homes from Habitat. Sept. 18 deadline for CHT practice workshop



The deadline to register for the Oct. 3 Apprenticeship/CHT Field Test Practice Workshop is Sept 18. The event will take place at Kemptville College, starting at 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 3:00 p.m. Stations available include grading and drainage, chainsaw, instrument, irrigation controller and skid steer. LO and the CFL


Don’t miss out on Landscape Ontario Day at the Rogers Centre on Oct. 23, when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats visit the Toronto Argonauts. Join LO members on the field in the fan tunnel to meet and greet CFL stars. Busing will be running out of Waterloo and Golden Horseshoe for $25, while tickets to the game are $22. Safety Groups can save you money


The Safety Groups Program (SGP), is a five-year voluntary program of the WSIB that rewards firms that implement effective health and safety and return to work measures into daily business, is now accepting new members. At the beginning of each year, your firm selects five safety elements that it will initiate or improve upon from the Safety Groups’ Achievement List provided by the WSIB. At the end of the year, your group can receive a rebate based on the entire group’s success in implementing the selected safety elements. The fee is $175 per firm for the year, with a maximum of 25 participants. For more information on the 2010 program, click here.
