New Annuals 2008 – Mixed containers

The container craze shows no sign of slowing down, as gardeners enjoy the versatility and creative options that mixing combinations of annuals and perennials can provide. Here are some new selections to try in your pots, baskets and window boxes this summer.








































































Angelface® ‘Dark Violet’ summer snapdragon

Angelonia Angelface® ‘Dark Violet’
Angelface® ‘Dark Violet’ is Proven Winners new addition to the series for 2008. It offers rich, velvet-like purple flowers with fantastic spring through summer colour. ‘Dark Violet’ loves the heat and is great in the landscape or in containers. It will reach 25-35 cm (10-14 in.) and does best in full sun.
Aloha calibrachoa

Calibrachoa Aloha series
The Aloha calibrachoa series was bred for use in combination planters. Semi-upright plants are covered with large flowers in bold tropical colours. Flowers with the Tiki designation display a dark red centre. New this year are Red Fox™ Aloha Ticki Salmon, Gold, Pink, Strawberry and Orange.
Callie® ‘White with Rose Vein’ calibrachoa

Calibrachoa Callie® ‘White with Rose Vein’
Callie® calibrachoa has many exciting colours, new this year is Callie® ‘White with Rose Vein’ with a unique bloom with large white flowers, accented by a dark rose eye and veins. It is a very eye-catching cultivar. Grows 10-20 cm (4-8 in.) tall and 30-40 cm (12-16 in.) wide.

The new Spring Fling™ ‘PureYellow’ offers gardeners a pure, super bright, yellow colour that will stand out in any combination or basket. ‘Pure Yellow’ also exhibits a nicely mounding habit. Best in full sun.
Superbells® calibrachoa

Calibrachoa Superbells®
Superbells® calibrachoa are prized for their large, self-cleaning flowers and semi-upright cascading habit. Grows in full sun to partial shade. Ideal for use in mixed containers. New colours this year include ‘Apricot Punch’, ‘Dreamsicle’, ‘Red’, ‘Saffron’, ‘Scarlet’, ‘Trailing White’, ‘Yellow Chiffon’.
Fresca™ ‘Yellow’ goodenia

Goodenia Fresca™
A new low-growing, heat-loving plant with dainty yellow flowers which is a great accent plant for baskets and mixed containers. The attractive glossy-green foliage provides an appealing texture contrast. Grows 10-20 cm (4-8 in.) tall and 40-25 cm (16-20 in.) wide with a trailing habit.

Impatiens ButterflyTM
ButterflyTM impatiens have a semi-trailing growth habit and each mounded plant is loaded with small, unique flowers. Ideally suited for hanging baskets, window boxes, mixed planters and garden beds in partial shade. New colours are ‘Salmon Eye’ and ‘Cherry’.
‘Javelin’ juncus

Juncus ‘Javelin’
Here is an excellent “thriller” for mixed containers – this tall and stately green grass makes a dramatic statement. In gardens and landscapes, ‘Javelin’ can grow 1.5 m (5 ft.) tall and spreads 45-50 cm (18-20 in.). It performs well through a wide range of environmental stress. This rugged plant can grow in standing water, but also handles heat and drought. Provides great winter interest, maintaining its upright, stiff foliage in a straw colour. Plant in full sun.
Osteospermum Red Fox™ Summertime®

Osteospermum
Red Fox™ Summertime® osteospermums offer some exciting new colours. Summertime® ‘Blueberry’ displays deep shades of purples and yellows and as the bloom matures it turns to different shades of blue. Pentas Starla™ series
Strong vigorous growth makes this new series more versatile across all regions of Canada. Starla™ pentas are ideal for creating the trendy tropical look in your garden. ‘Chocolate Mint’ coleus

Solenostemon scutellariodes ‘Chocolate Mint’
Colour is the key to this new made-for-the-shade coleus. Easy-to-grow, dark-leafed plants have a rich chocolate colour, with each mid-size leaf finely edged in soothing mint green. The upright plants are well-suited to in-ground plantings and large containers. Plant in full shade — planting in full sun will cause leaf scorch. Grows 30-35 cm (12-14 in.) tall and spreads 25-30 cm (10-12 in.).
‘Fishnet Stockings’ coleus

Solenostemon scutellariodes ‘Fishnet Stockings’
This large leaf coleus has striking green and burgundy variegation. Grows 60-90 cm (24-36 in.) tall in partial to full shade. Pinch off flowers as they appear to keep the foliage in top shade. Can be used in combination planters and garden borders.
‘Religious Radish’ coleus

Solenostemon scutellariodes ‘Religious Radish’
‘Religious Radish’ has jagged moss-green leaves with raspberry venation that add a lovely pink hue to the garden. Grows 60-90 cm (24-36 in.) tall in sun or shade, and can be used in mixed containers and garden beds. To keep the foliage in top shape, pinch off the small flowers as they appear.
Royal GlissadeTM coleus

Solenostemon scutellariodes Royal GlissadeTM
Large leaves with deep tones of red-pink and burgundy. Will grow in sun or shade and reaches up to 90 cm (36 in.) tall. Use in borders or containers. To keep foliage in top shape, pinch off flowers as they appear.
‘Capriccio’ stipa

Stipa ‘Capriccio’
This wispy, fine-textured green grass adds a soft touch to in-ground and mixed container plantings. Heat and drought-tolerant, ‘Capriccio’ is useful for landscapes, bedding, mixed containers and hanging baskets. Plant in full sun. Grows 35-40 cm (14-16 in.) tall and 60-70 cm (24-28 in.) wide.
AbundaTM bacopa

Sutera AbundaTM series
The Abunda bacopas are reported to withstand the summer heat well. Will grow 20-30 cm (8-12 in.) tall and wide. Best in full sun. Can be used in hanging baskets and mixed containers. New colours are ‘Colossal White’ and ‘Collosal Blue’.
